Experience live music at its theatrical best with singer songwriter Alice Night and composer Robert Davidson at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. A collection of songs with themes spanning innocence, the questioning of contemporary culture and strained love, Alice sings with integrity and dark hope.
An ‘Artivist’ hybrid who transmutes music, storytelling and performance art; Alice brings her debut album to the stage and explores the questions that burn at the core of her wonderings, Culture How Could You? brings the audience to an alternative reality with social systems and foibles of its own.
Taking us to the moon and back to explore the question : Culture How Could you? The shows futuristic set is a lush backdrop for Alice’s poetic and emotive writing and is the perfect surrounding for the stunning arrangements of ARIA nominated and APRA award winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology) who features on her upcoming album and in the show.
Working with composer Robert Davidson evoked Alice’s interest in the creation of new and highly creative work, straying from her singer-songwriter roots into the great unknown that is conceptual art music making. Live, Robert and Alice complement each other as double bass meets ethereal vocal performance and piano parts interweave with intricate guitar work.
Inspired by Alice’s adventures in New York, Culture How Could You? sprung to life from scribbled lyrics in local cafes and strangers' lounge rooms. Alice journeys from a Brooklyn basement with a weary carpet for a bed, to a musical mansion with a grand piano at her fingertips.
Enlisting a cast of performance heavy-weights Bravo Child (performance artist/poet), Anatole (multi-instrumentalist/composer), ALPHAMAMA (singer/musician) and Ma Ya Ga Ng Re Ne (noise and drone); Alice sings the songs that humanity longs to sing. As we collectively witness the world lose its innocence; Alice Night reminds us of the innate and wondrous but often stifled curious child, the brave tenacity of the human spirit and why even when love turns its back on us, we love again.
Join us in catharsis and reflect with Alice as she confronts the ambiguity that is culture and what it’s doing to people today.
